Beijing is one of the world's most important business hubs, hosting countless international conferences, trade shows, and corporate meetings. Most guides cover etiquette and hotels and stop there, which is why business visitors keep getting caught by the administrative side: the police registration slip, the permit deadlines, and the invoice rules that decide whether a trip is reimbursable. This guide covers both halves, using the Ministry of Commerce 2025 guide for foreign business visitors as the source for the official requirements.
Best Business Hotels
China World Hotel in the CBD offers comprehensive business facilities. Kerry Hotel Beijing provides modern meeting spaces. The Ritz-Carlton Beijing features executive lounges. JW Marriott offers business-friendly amenities. These hotels have business centers, meeting rooms, and English-speaking staff.
Business Etiquette
Exchange business cards with both hands and study the card before putting it away. Punctuality is highly valued. Senior members should be greeted first. Formal attire is expected for meetings. Avoid discussing sensitive topics. Building relationships (guanxi) is important for long-term business success.

Business Dining
Business dinners are common and important for relationship building. The host typically orders and pays. Seating follows hierarchy - wait to be seated. Toasting is common with baijiu or wine. Don't finish all food on your plate. Many business hotels have excellent restaurants suitable for professional dining.
Entry Paperwork Most Business Visitors Miss (24-Hour Registration)
If you stay in a hotel, the hotel registers your address for you when you hand over your passport at reception, and there is nothing else to do. If you stay anywhere else - a colleague's flat, a serviced apartment booked directly, a company guesthouse - you are required to register at the local police station within 24 hours of arrival, with your passport plus the rental contract or property ownership certificate. This is not a formality. The stamped registration slip is checked when you apply for a visa extension, a residence permit, a work permit, a bank account or a driving license, and the exit-entry administration may also demand it when you apply for a future visa. Failure to register can carry a warning or a fine of up to 2,000 RMB. Full walkthrough, including which police station and the exact form to ask for: our China Residence Registration guide.
If You Are Working, Not Just Visiting: Three Deadlines
Meeting a supplier for a week on a visa-free or M entry is one thing; working from a Beijing office is another, and the deadlines are strict. Residence permit: apply within 30 days of entry if you entered on a work visa. Permit extension: file 30 days before expiry. Changes of passport or printed details: report within 10 days. Work permit: your employer files the extension 30 days before expiry and reports changes to your name, passport number or position within 10 working days. If you only need more tourist days, apply to extend your stay at least 7 days before your permitted stay ends - and note that the 30-day visa-free scheme and 240-hour transit cannot be extended at all, so the standard fix is a weekend in Hong Kong, Seoul or Bangkok and a fresh entry. The full breakdown, including the Andingmen East Street office and the 160 RMB stay extension, is in our China Visa Extension and Residence Permit guide.
Paying for Things as a Foreign Business Traveler
Alipay and WeChat Pay both accept foreign cards now. You bind a card in the app - Visa, Mastercard, UnionPay, American Express, JCB, Diners Club and Discover are all supported - and the issuer verifies it, which occasionally fails and needs a call to your bank. Limits and fees vary by payment product, so check the in-app terms before you rely on it for a large payment. UnionPay's app also lets you open an e-money card and top it up, which some visitors find more predictable than a foreign card. Cash still matters: you may bring up to 20,000 RMB in or out of the country per trip, bank outlets exchange foreign currency and hand out small notes, and every international airport has exchange counters and ATMs. One business-specific habit to build: always ask for the fapiao (发票), the official tax invoice. Hotels, DiDi rides and restaurants can issue them, and without one an expense claim usually fails. For DiDi, request the electronic invoice from the completed trip in the app; for hotels, ask at checkout and give them your company's Chinese tax ID if they need it.
Getting Around for Business
The CBD area is walkable between many business locations, and the subway is fast but crowded between 08:00-09:30 and 17:30-19:00. For meetings, book a DiDi rather than hailing a street taxi: the fare is metered and shown before you confirm, payment is in-app, and you get an electronic invoice for expenses. There are three entry points - the DiDi-Greater China app with your home number and an international card, or the Taxi function inside Alipay or WeChat - and all three avoid the language problem entirely. For intercity travel, the 12306 English website and app now accept foreign passports and foreign bank cards, but you must complete identity verification first: the system can verify automatically from your name and passport number, or you upload a photo of the passport page, or you verify in person at a station ticket office. If your destination is under about 1,200 km, the high-speed train beats flying door to door; Beijing to Shanghai is 4 hours 18 minutes city center to city center. If you do fly, remember that PEK and PKX are 80 km apart and that China Southern and China Eastern mostly use PKX while Air China uses PEK.
Practical Business Tips
Bring plenty of business cards. Have presentation materials in both English and Chinese. Confirm meetings the day before. International hotels can arrange interpreters. WeChat is essential for business communication - add your contacts before you land, because WeChat registration and payments are smoother once your account is active. Most international business is conducted in English, but a few phrases of Mandarin change the tone of a dinner. Respect hierarchy and seniority in all interactions. Book hotels with a proper business center if you need printing, binding or a quiet room for a call, and check whether the rate includes breakfast - many Beijing business hotels price it separately.
Legal Details That Catch Business Visitors
Five rules from the official guide that are easy to break by accident. One: do not photograph military installations or any building, site or facility used for military purposes - this is treated seriously, and it includes some unmarked buildings near business districts. Two: comments you post on social media while in China must comply with Chinese law, and this applies to foreign platforms too if you are physically in the country. Three: residence registration is a legal obligation, not a hotel courtesy, and the burden is on you when you are not in a hotel. Four: keeping dogs and cats is regulated, which matters if you are relocating with a pet rather than visiting. Five: if you lose your passport, report it to the local police station immediately - the police report is what the embassy or consulate needs before they will issue a replacement travel document, and it is what lets you leave the country legally. Emergency numbers: 110 for police, 119 for fire, 120 for ambulance, and the operators speak Chinese, so have a Chinese speaker or your hotel front desk ready to help.
