Beijing for Digital Nomads: Complete Remote Work Guide
Hidden Beijing Guide

Beijing is an underrated destination for digital nomads. Fast internet (when VPN works), affordable cost of living compared to Western cities, incredible food, and a fascinating blend of ancient and modern. This guide covers everything you need to work remotely from Beijing, from finding reliable WiFi to choosing the right neighborhood for your stay.

Internet & VPN for Remote Work (The Most Critical Section)

Internet speed in Beijing: hotel WiFi: 20-50 Mbps (sufficient for video calls). Coworking space: 50-100 Mbps (excellent). Fiber to home (long-term rental): 100-500 Mbps (China Telecom, China Unicom, China Mobile). The problem: China's internet firewall blocks Google, Gmail, WhatsApp, Instagram, Facebook, X/Twitter, YouTube, Slack, and many other essential work tools. VPN is mandatory. Best VPNs for stable work: ExpressVPN: most reliable for video calls, $13/month. NordVPN: good for general browsing, $11/month. Astrill: popular among expats, $15/month. Mullvad: privacy-focused, $5/month. Critical tip: install and test your VPN BEFORE arriving in China. Many VPN websites are blocked within China. Install 2-3 VPNs as backup (if one stops working, switch to another). For video calls (Zoom, Teams, Google Meet): some VPNs throttle video. ExpressVPN and Astrill perform best for video calls. Connection time: 5-30 seconds to connect. If a VPN is not connecting, try switching protocols (OpenVPN, WireGuard, IKEv2). Buy a Chinese phone number (see our Chinese Phone Number guide) to get 4G/5G backup. China Unicom offers foreigner-friendly SIM cards at Beijing Capital Airport. Data plans: 50-100 RMB/month for 20-50GB. WiFi calling: WhatsApp and FaceTime audio calls often work without VPN on Chinese mobile data (but not on WiFi without VPN).

Features: premium location, excellent WiFi, modern design, regular networking events. Best for: professionals who want a polished workspace. Kr Space (Zhongguancun): Address: Zhongguancun Science Park. Price: ~1,200-1,800 RMB/month ($170-250). Features: tech startup vibe, fast internet, affordable. Best for: tech workers and developers. Weekend coworking: most coworking spaces are quieter on weekends. Cafes in Sanlitun, Wudaokou, and Guomao are laptop-friendly on weekends. Tips: buy a day pass before committing to monthly membership. Most spaces offer free trial days. Download the WeWork app to book meeting rooms. Coworking spaces in Beijing generally close by 8-10 PM. For late-night work, you need a cafe or your accommodation.

Monthly rent: 10,000-20,000 RMB for a 1-bedroom apartment. Dongcheng (Hutong area): Best for authentic Beijing experience. Pros: beautiful traditional architecture, central location, unique atmosphere, quieter than Sanlitun. Cons: apartments may have thin walls, less modern amenities, some buildings lack elevators. Food delivery: Meituan and Ele.me are the main delivery apps (Chinese language only, use Google Translate). Delivery is fast (20-40 minutes) and cheap (delivery fee: 3-5 RMB). Groceries: Jenny Wang's (Sanlitun) and April Gourmet (various locations) are Western-style supermarkets. Wumart and Hualian are local options. Transportation: DiDi (Chinese Uber) is essential.
