Getting sick in a foreign country is stressful, especially when you do not speak the language. Beijing has excellent international hospitals with English-speaking doctors, but knowing which one to go to and how to access them before you need them is critical. This guide covers everything from emergency rooms to routine pharmacy visits.

What to Do in a Medical Emergency (Step by Step)
Emergency number: 120 (ambulance). Note: operators speak Chinese. If you call 120, hand the phone to a Chinese speaker (hotel front desk, bystander). Do not expect an English-speaking operator. Better approach: go directly to Beijing United Family Hospital emergency room (address saved in your phone). They have English-speaking triage nurses. If you cannot get to BJU, call BJU's emergency hotline at 4008-919191 and ask for an ambulance. They can dispatch one. Hidden Beijing recommends: save BJU's emergency number and address in your phone before you need it. Print the Chinese address: '北京和睦家医院, 朝阳区将台路2号, 电话: 4008-919191' and keep it in your wallet. For non-emergency situations: use DiDi to go to BJU or the nearest SOS clinic. Show the driver the Chinese name. Insurance: BJU has direct billing with most major international insurers. If you need to pay upfront, costs are: ER consultation 50-100 USD, basic lab tests 30-80 USD, X-ray 40-100 USD. Keep all receipts for insurance reimbursement.
