Beijing Capital Airport (PEK) to City Center: All Options
Capital Airport is 25 km northeast of central Beijing. Option 1: Airport Express Train (Best overall). Location: Terminal 3 basement level (follow 'Airport Express' signs in English). Terminal 2 connected by walkway. Cost: 25 RMB ($3.50) one way. Duration: 20-25 minutes to Dongzhimen Station (Line 2 subway). Frequency: every 10 minutes (6:00 AM - 10:30 PM). Payment: contactless Visa/Mastercard accepted, Alipay/WeChat Pay, or cash at ticket counter. Note: the express train has dedicated luggage racks and is comfortable with suitcases. Once at Dongzhimen, transfer to Subway Line 2 or take a DiDi to your hotel (additional 10-20 minutes). Total time to hotel: 35-50 minutes. Option 2: DiDi Ride-Hailing (Most convenient). Cost: 100-150 RMB ($14-21) to central Beijing (Chaoyang, Dongcheng). Duration: 45-90 minutes depending on traffic. Pickup location: follow signs to 'Ride-Hailing Pickup Point' in Terminal 3 basement parking (B2). Open DiDi app, set pickup as 'Beijing Capital Airport T3 Departures' (the app detects airport mode). Wait time for driver: 3-8 minutes. Avoid: taxis at the official queue. They are more expensive (150-200 RMB) and drivers may refuse foreign cards. Option 3: Airport Shuttle Bus. Cost: 30 RMB ($4). Duration: 60-90 minutes. Several routes to major areas (Xidan, Wangfujing, Zhongguancun). Buses run every 30 minutes. Less convenient than the train but cheaper. Our recommendation: take the Airport Express Train. Fastest, cheapest, and most reliable. Use DiDi only if you have heavy luggage or are traveling in a group.
Beijing Daxing Airport (PKX) to City Center: All Options
Daxing Airport is 46 km south of central Beijing. Newer, larger, and less crowded than PEK. Option 1: Daxing Airport Express Train. Location: airport basement level (clearly marked in English). Cost: 35 RMB ($5) one way. Duration: 19 minutes to Caoqiao Station (Line 10 subway). Frequency: every 10-15 minutes (6:00 AM - 10:30 PM). Payment: same as PEK - contactless card, Alipay/WeChat, cash. Pros: fastest option, comfortable seating, luggage space. Cons: 19 minutes is just to Caoqiao, then add 15-25 minutes on Line 10 to your final destination. Total time: 35-50 minutes. Option 2: DiDi Ride-Hailing. Cost: 150-200 RMB ($21-28) to central Beijing. Duration: 60-90 minutes depending on traffic. PKX is far from central Beijing - the DiDi ride is long and expensive. Pickup location: follow signs to 'Ride-Hailing' area on B1. Option 3: Airport Shuttle Bus. Cost: 40 RMB ($6). Duration: 80-120 minutes. Routes cover Beijing West Railway Station, Beijing South Railway Station, and major areas. Our recommendation: take the Daxing Express Train. It is significantly faster than driving and the 19-minute ride to Caoqiao is efficient. From Caoqiao, transfer to Line 10. Note: PKX is a beautiful airport worth experiencing even if you do not fly from it. The architecture by Zaha Hadid is stunning.

Airport Transfer Cost & Time Cheat Sheet (What to Book Before You Land)
Straight numbers, checked in 2026, for a solo traveler heading to a hotel in Dongcheng or Chaoyang. From PEK: Airport Express 25 RMB, 20-25 minutes to Dongzhimen, then 10-20 minutes to the hotel = 35-50 minutes total and about 30-40 RMB with a subway transfer. DiDi 100-150 RMB, 45-90 minutes door to door. Official taxi queue 150-200 RMB and often slower than DiDi thanks to payment friction at the end of the ride. Shuttle bus 30 RMB, 60-90 minutes. From PKX: Daxing Express 35 RMB, 19 minutes to Caoqiao, then Line 10 = 35-50 minutes total and about 40-50 RMB. DiDi 150-200 RMB, 60-90 minutes. Shuttle bus 40 RMB, 80-120 minutes. The break-even is simple: one person with a normal suitcase should take the train; two or more people with luggage should take a DiDi, because 130 RMB split two ways is cheaper than dragging bags through two subway transfers at rush hour. Three situations where the train is a bad idea regardless of price: landing after 22:30 (the last Airport Express leaves around 22:30-23:00), arriving with more than one large checked bag, or arriving during the 7:30-9:30 AM and 17:30-19:30 PM subway crush. Three situations where a pre-booked private transfer beats DiDi: landing after midnight, traveling with young children, or landing at PKX and staying in Haidian or Shunyi, where the 60-90 minute ride is genuinely miserable. Pre-booked transfers run 250-400 RMB and include a driver holding a name card at the exit, which is worth it on a first arrival in a country where you cannot read the signs.
First-Time Arrival Step-by-Step (What to Do the Moment You Land)
Step 1: Follow 'Arrivals' signs. You do not need to fill out an arrival card (no longer required for most nationalities in 2025). Step 2: Go to immigration. Have your passport and onward ticket (if using transit policy) ready. Look for 'Foreign Passports' counters. Step 3: Collect luggage. Wait for your bags at the designated carousel. Step 4: Go through customs (green channel if nothing to declare). Step 5: Buy a SIM card at the China Unicom or China Mobile counter (recommended). Step 6: Connect to airport WiFi. PEK WiFi: free, requires 30-minute activation via SMS or get a code from airport information desk. PKX WiFi: free, similar process. Step 7: Connect your VPN and test it before leaving the airport. Step 8: Get cash from ATM if needed (Bank of China ATMs are near exits in both airports). Step 9: Follow signs to Airport Express train or ride-hailing pickup. Pro tip: Do not use official taxis at PEK Terminal 3 - they charge higher rates and may take longer routes. The Airport Express train is faster and cheaper. If you must take a taxi, use DiDi (English interface, fixed pricing). Keep your hotel address in Chinese ready to show. Both airports have free luggage carts. Use them - the distances to train platforms are long.
