Beijing's public transportation system is extensive, efficient, and remarkably affordable. With over 20 subway lines, countless bus routes, and abundant taxis, getting around the city is straightforward once you understand the basics. This guide will help you navigate Beijing like a local.
Subway System
The Beijing Subway is the world's busiest and one of the most extensive systems, with over 20 lines covering the entire city. Stations and announcements are in both Chinese and English. Fares range from 3-9 RMB depending on distance. Buy a Transit One Card for convenience or use the ticket machines. Rush hours (7-9 AM, 5-7 PM) are extremely crowded. The airport express connects directly to terminals.
Buses
Beijing's bus network complements the subway with over 1,000 routes. Fares are incredibly cheap (2 RMB flat rate with card). Buses can be crowded and slower than the subway due to traffic. English signage is limited on buses, making them challenging for non-Chinese speakers. However, they're great for scenic routes and reaching areas not served by subway.

Taxis & Ride-Hailing
Taxis are plentiful and inexpensive compared to Western cities. The flag fall is 13 RMB for the first 3km. Have your destination written in Chinese. Ride-hailing app Didi is convenient and accepts foreign credit cards. Official taxis are metered and safe. Avoid unmarked cars offering rides. Tipping is not expected. Night surcharges apply after 11 PM.
Biking
Beijing is surprisingly bike-friendly with dedicated lanes on major roads. Shared bikes (Mobike, HelloBike) are everywhere and cost about 1-2 RMB per ride. The city is flat, making cycling easy. Bike-sharing apps require Chinese payment methods. Many hotels rent bikes to guests. Cycling through hutongs offers an intimate neighborhood experience.
Airport Transfers
Capital Airport (PEK) is connected to the city by Airport Express train (25 RMB, 30 minutes to Dongzhimen). Daxing Airport (PKX) has an express train to Caoqiao station. Airport buses serve major areas. Taxis cost 100-150 RMB to the city center. Pre-book hotel transfers for convenience. Allow extra time during rush hours.
