Hidden Beijing Guide

The Forbidden City, officially known as the Palace Museum, is the world's largest and best-preserved ancient wooden structure. This UNESCO World Heritage site served as the imperial palace for 24 emperors during the Ming and Qing dynasties. Today, it stands as China's most visited museum and a symbol of Chinese civilization.

History & Significance

Built between 1406 and 1420, the Forbidden City covers 720,000 square meters with 999 rooms. It was the political and ceremonial center of Chinese government for nearly 500 years. The complex exemplifies traditional Chinese palatial architecture and feng shui principles. The name 'Forbidden City' refers to the fact that entry was forbidden to commoners without imperial permission.

What to See

The Outer Court features the Hall of Supreme Harmony, where major ceremonies were held. The Inner Court includes the Palace of Heavenly Purity, the emperor's residence. The Imperial Garden offers beautiful landscaping. The Treasure Gallery displays imperial artifacts. The Clock Gallery showcases elaborate timepieces. Plan at least 3-4 hours for a thorough visit.
