Hidden Beijing Guide

The Great Wall of China is one of humanity's greatest architectural achievements and a bucket-list destination for travelers worldwide. From Beijing, several accessible sections offer unique experiences, from fully restored grandeur to wild, unrestored authenticity.

Best Sections to Visit

Mutianyu is the best section for most visitors - fully restored, less crowded than Badaling, with stunning views and a toboggan ride down. Badaling is the most famous and crowded but easily accessible. Jinshanling offers a moderate hike with beautiful scenery. Simatai is partially restored and open for night tours. Huanghuacheng features a lakeside section. Each section offers a different experience.

Getting There

Mutianyu is 1.5 hours from Beijing by car or tourist bus. Public bus 916 Express to Huairou, then transfer to bus H23. Organized tours offer convenience. Badaling is reachable by train from Beijing North Railway Station (S2 line) or bus 877 from Deshengmen. Jinshanling requires a private car or organized tour. Leave early (7 AM) to avoid crowds and heat.
