Hidden Beijing Guide

The Temple of Heaven is a masterpiece of Ming dynasty architecture and a UNESCO World Heritage site. This magnificent complex was where emperors of the Ming and Qing dynasties held annual ceremonies to pray for good harvests. Today, it's also a beloved public park where locals practice tai chi, play music, and socialize.

History & Significance

Built in 1420 by the Yongle Emperor, the Temple of Heaven represents the intersection of earth and heaven in Chinese cosmology. The circular Hall of Prayer for Good Harvests symbolizes heaven, while the square outer wall represents earth. The complex demonstrates remarkable acoustic engineering - whispers can travel between certain points. It was opened to the public in 1918.

Main Structures

The Hall of Prayer for Good Harvests is the iconic triple-gabled circular building. The Imperial Vault of Heaven features the Echo Wall where sound travels along the curved surface. The Circular Mound Altar was where emperors performed winter solstice ceremonies. The Fasting Palace was where emperors abstained before rituals. Each structure showcases exquisite architectural details.
