The Summer Palace is the largest and most well-preserved royal park in China. This UNESCO World Heritage site features a harmonious ensemble of lakes, gardens, and palaces that served as the imperial family's retreat from the Forbidden City. Its design perfectly embodies the Chinese philosophy of balancing natural beauty with human craftsmanship.
History & Design
Originally built in 1750 during the Qing Dynasty, the Summer Palace was destroyed and rebuilt twice. The current structure dates to 1886. The design follows the Chinese landscape garden tradition, using Kunming Lake and Longevity Hill as natural focal points. The garden incorporates elements from famous sites across China, creating a 'garden of gardens' concept.
Key Attractions
The Long Corridor features over 14,000 painted scenes on its beams. The Marble Boat sits elegantly on Kunming Lake. The Tower of Buddhist Incense crowns Longevity Hill. The Seventeen-Arch Bridge connects to South Lake Island. The Garden of Harmonious Interests replicates famous Suzhou gardens. Each area offers unique photo opportunities and peaceful retreats.
