China runs three separate immigration clocks - how long your visa lets you stay, whether you hold a residence permit, and whether your work permit is valid - and each one has its own filing deadline. Miss the deadline on any of them and the consequences range from a 500 RMB fine at the airport to a five-year entry ban. This guide lays out the official timelines from the Ministry of Commerce 2025 guide for foreign business visitors, then translates them into what you actually do at the Beijing exit-entry bureau.

Three Different Clocks (Get These Deadlines Right)
Stay duration - the number of days your visa or visa-free entry allows. If you need more, apply to the exit-entry administration of the local public security bureau at least 7 days before your permitted stay expires. Residence permit - if you hold one, apply for an extension 30 days before it expires. If you change passports or any detail printed on the permit changes, apply to update the information within 10 days of the change. Work permit - your employer applies for an extension 30 days before expiry, and reports changes to your name, passport number or position within 10 working days. Entering on a work visa - apply for your residence permit within 30 days of entry. Those five numbers are the whole system, and the 7-day, 30-day and 10-day figures are the ones people miss.
Extending a Tourist Stay in Beijing
Where: the Exit-Entry Administration Bureau of the Beijing Municipal Public Security Bureau, 2 Andingmen East Street, Dongcheng District. It is a large, reasonably organized hall with English signage and a queue ticket system. Bring: your passport, the police registration slip for your address, one or two passport photos, your onward flight booking, hotel bookings for the extra days, and a short written reason. Bring a bank card or cash for the fee, which is around 160 RMB for a stay extension. Timeline: submit at least 7 days before expiry, expect 5 to 7 working days to process, and do not book a flight that leaves before you have the passport back in hand - they keep it while processing. What you get: typically a single 15 to 30 day extension, granted once. A second extension is possible but increasingly scrutinized, and at that point the officer will usually suggest leaving and re-entering.

Visa-Free Entry Cannot Be Extended
The 240-hour visa-free transit and the 30-day unilateral visa-free scheme are not extendable as a matter of routine policy. The only recognized exceptions are force majeure - a documented medical emergency, a cancelled flight with an airline certificate, a natural disaster - and even then you need to go to the exit-entry bureau with evidence before your permitted stay lapses, not after. The practical alternative that everyone in Beijing uses: a weekend in Hong Kong, Macau, Seoul or Bangkok. All four reset the clock on a fresh entry, and Hong Kong counts as a third country or region for transit purposes, which is why the Beijing-Hong Kong routing is so popular.
Converting to a Residence Permit
A residence permit is the document that turns you from a visitor into a resident. It replaces the visa sticker in terms of what it authorizes, allows multiple entries without re-applying, and runs from one to five years depending on your category. You need one if you are working, studying, or joining family for more than a short visit, and you must apply within 30 days of entry on the relevant visa. The stack of paper is the hard part: passport, registration slip, a medical check from the Beijing International Travel Healthcare Center (a specific, approved clinic - a check from your home country usually is not accepted), a clean criminal record certificate from your home country, notarized and apostilled, passport photos on a white background, and a sponsorship letter plus business license copy from your employer or school. Budget two to four weeks of running around even though the official processing time is shorter, because the medical check and the criminal record certificate are the bottlenecks.
Work Permits and the 90-Day Split
China splits foreign work into two paths. If you will work in China for no more than 90 days, you apply for a Z visa abroad using the Notification Letter for Foreigners Work Permit, and you work only within the window printed on that visa. If you will work for more than 90 days, you apply for the same Z visa, enter, then convert to a residence permit for work - and only then can you legally start. Working on a tourist, business or transit entry is illegal, and the penalty falls on both sides: fines for you, fines and possible license suspension for the employer. The work permit card and the residence permit are two separate documents, and you should carry both. Extensions are the employer's filing, 30 days before expiry, so the date that matters to you is the date your HR department actually submits, not the date on the card.
Overstays, Fines and the Medical Exception
Overstaying is treated on a sliding scale. A short overstay of a day or two typically ends in a 500 RMB fine at the exit-entry bureau or at the airport, and a black mark in the system. Longer overstays escalate to 5,000 to 10,000 RMB, possible detention, and deportation at your own expense, and serious cases carry a multi-year ban on re-entry. There is no grace period, and forgetting is not a defense. The one genuine exception is a medical emergency - if you are hospitalized, get the hospital to issue documentation and send someone to the exit-entry bureau with it while you are still inside the permitted period, or as close to it as physically possible. A hospital letter dated after your visa expired is much weaker than one dated before.
What to Bring: The Folder That Works
Build one physical folder before you go, because these counters accept paper and reject phones. Contents: passport plus photocopies of the photo page, the visa page and the entry stamp; the police registration slip for your current address; two passport photos; printed flight itinerary showing your intended departure; hotel bookings covering the extension period; a bank statement covering the last three months; an employer or school letter if relevant; and the application form downloaded, printed and filled in at home. Bring a pen. Every one of these halls has a photocopy desk and a queue for it, and arriving with copies already made is the difference between one visit and two.
