English-Speaking Hospitals in Beijing 2025: Complete Foreigner's Guide
Hidden Beijing Guide

Getting sick in a foreign country is stressful, especially when you do not speak the language. Beijing has excellent international hospitals with English-speaking doctors, but knowing which one to go to and how to access them before you need them is critical. This guide covers everything from emergency rooms to routine pharmacy visits.

Top International Hospitals in Beijing (English-Speaking Staff)

Beijing United Family Hospital (BJU): The most foreigner-friendly hospital in Beijing. Multiple locations: main hospital in Jiangtai (Chaoyang district), clinics in Shunyi, Sanlitun, and CBD. English-speaking doctors available 24/7. All departments have English signage. Accepts international health insurance (direct billing with most major insurers). Emergency room wait time: 15-30 minutes. Address for main hospital: 2 Jiangtai Road, Chaoyang District. Phone: 4008-919191 (English operator available). Beijing International Medical Center (BIMC): Part of Peking University Third Hospital. Dedicated international wing with English-speaking staff. Located in Haidian district (near universities). Good for specialist consultations. Emergency room: 24/7 with English triage. Phone: 010-5901-2121. Prices: 50-100 USD for a consultation. Beijing New Century International Hospital for Children: Best option for traveling families with children. English-speaking pediatricians. Located near Sanlitun. Emergency pediatric care available 24/7. Phone: 010-5178-3366. SOS International Clinic: Part of the global SOS network. Multiple locations including Sanlitun and CBD. Best for routine consultations and travel medicine. Walk-ins welcome. Pharmacy on site with English labels. Phone: 010-6462-9112.

What to Do in a Medical Emergency (Step by Step)

Emergency number: 120 (ambulance). Note: operators speak Chinese. If you call 120, hand the phone to a Chinese speaker (hotel front desk, bystander). Do not expect an English-speaking operator. Better approach: go directly to Beijing United Family Hospital emergency room (address saved in your phone). They have English-speaking triage nurses. If you cannot get to BJU, call BJU's emergency hotline at 4008-919191 and ask for an ambulance. They can dispatch one. Hidden Beijing recommends: save BJU's emergency number and address in your phone before you need it. Print the Chinese address: '北京和睦家医院, 朝阳区将台路2号, 电话: 4008-919191' and keep it in your wallet. For non-emergency situations: use DiDi to go to BJU or the nearest SOS clinic. Show the driver the Chinese name. Insurance: BJU has direct billing with most major international insurers. If you need to pay upfront, costs are: ER consultation 50-100 USD, basic lab tests 30-80 USD, X-ray 40-100 USD. Keep all receipts for insurance reimbursement.

Pharmacies and Basic Medical Needs

Finding basic medications in Beijing as a foreigner: International pharmacies: BJU pharmacy (at all BJU locations). English labels. Accepts foreign credit cards. Stocks most international brand medications. Prescription and over-the-counter items. SOS pharmacy (at SOS International Clinic locations). English labels. Stocks medications familiar to Western travelers. Local pharmacies (Yaodian): look for green cross signs with 药店. Staff generally do not speak English. Bring the box or a photo of what you need. Google Translate for medicine names. Show the generic/international name. Most local pharmacies accept Alipay/WeChat Pay. What you can buy without prescription in China: basic pain relievers (ibuprofen, paracetamol), cold and flu medications, allergy medications (antihistamines), motion sickness pills, basic first aid supplies (bandages, antiseptic). What requires a prescription (and you should bring from home): antibiotics, strong painkillers, sleeping pills, anxiety medication, blood pressure medication, insulin and diabetes supplies (bring extra + prescription). Hidden Beijing recommendation: bring a basic medical kit from home. Include: 5 days of any prescription medication (with original prescription), pain relievers, cold medicine, allergy medicine, motion sickness tablets, antiseptic wipes, bandages, diarrhea medication (essential - Beijing food can upset your stomach), rehydration salts. Most Western medications are available at BJU pharmacy or SOS pharmacy, but at 2-3x the home price.
