Method 1: 12306 Official Website (Cheapest, Most Reliable)
The official 12306 website (www.12306.cn) is the only direct source for train tickets. No third-party markup fees. Step 1: Go to 12306.cn and click the English language button (top right corner, labeled 'English'). Step 2: Click 'Register' and fill in your details. Name: enter your name EXACTLY as it appears on your passport. Include your middle name if it is on your passport. Nationality: select your country from the dropdown. Document type: select 'Passport'. Passport number: enter without spaces. Phone number: this is the most critical step. 12306 will send a verification SMS to this number. If you have a Chinese SIM card, use that number. If you do not, you may need to use trip.com (see Method 2). Email: any valid email. Step 3: Complete the CAPTCHA. This is intentionally difficult - it asks you to select images matching a Chinese character you cannot read. Click 'Refresh' until you get a simpler puzzle. Use Google Lens on your phone to translate the characters. Step 4: Verify your account. 12306 sends a verification link to your email. Click it within 24 hours. Step 5: Log in and search for trains. Enter your departure city (Beijing, Beijing South, Beijing West, Beijing Chaoyang - four different stations). Enter destination city. Example: Beijing South to Shanghai Hongqiao - the most popular route. Step 6: Select your train. G-trains are high-speed (300-350 km/h). D-trains are slower (200-250 km/h). Trip.com (formerly Ctrip) offers an English interface that is much easier for foreigners. It adds a small service fee (5-15 RMB per ticket) but saves significant frustration. Step 1: Download Trip.com app (available in your home country's app store) or visit trip.com. Step 2: Create account using your email and home country phone number (no Chinese SIM needed). Step 3: Search for trains. Same stations as 12306. Trip.com shows the exact same trains and prices as 12306 (before their service fee). Step 4: Add passenger. Select 'Passport' as document type. Trip.com's verification is more lenient than 12306 - most passports pass on first try. Step 5: Payment. Trip.com accepts Visa, Mastercard, Amex, PayPal, and Apple Pay. This is much easier than 12306's payment system. Step 6: Receive booking confirmation by email. Important: Trip.com tickets are NOT automatically linked to your passport at the station. Ticket Collection and Platform Navigation
Picking up paper tickets: go to any train station ticket office or ticket machine. Machines with the 'Passport' logo (a small passport icon on the screen) accept foreign passports. Step 1: Select 'English' on the machine. Step 2: Select 'Pick Up Tickets'. Step 3: Scan your passport at the designated area (bottom left of most machines). Step 4: Select all unpaid/uncollected tickets. Step 5: Confirm. The machine prints your tickets. No ticket needed for 12306 direct purchases: if you bought directly on 12306 with your passport, you can use your passport at the automatic gate to enter the station. Look for gates with the passport icon. Insert your passport (photo page facing up) at the gate. The gate opens. Keep your passport in hand - you need it again at the platform gate.
