Beijing is an underrated destination for digital nomads. Fast internet (when VPN works), affordable cost of living compared to Western cities, incredible food, and a fascinating blend of ancient and modern. This guide covers everything you need to work remotely from Beijing, from finding reliable WiFi to choosing the right neighborhood for your stay.
Internet & VPN for Remote Work (The Most Critical Section)
Internet speed in Beijing: hotel WiFi: 20-50 Mbps (sufficient for video calls). Coworking space: 50-100 Mbps (excellent). Fiber to home (long-term rental): 100-500 Mbps (China Telecom, China Unicom, China Mobile). The problem: China's internet firewall blocks Google, Gmail, WhatsApp, Instagram, Facebook, X/Twitter, YouTube, Slack, and many other essential work tools. VPN is mandatory. Best VPNs for stable work: ExpressVPN: most reliable for video calls, $13/month. NordVPN: good for general browsing, $11/month. Astrill: popular among expats, $15/month. Mullvad: privacy-focused, $5/month. Critical tip: install and test your VPN BEFORE arriving in China. Many VPN websites are blocked within China. Install 2-3 VPNs as backup (if one stops working, switch to another). For video calls (Zoom, Teams, Google Meet): some VPNs throttle video. ExpressVPN and Astrill perform best for video calls. Connection time: 5-30 seconds to connect. If a VPN is not connecting, try switching protocols (OpenVPN, WireGuard, IKEv2). Buy a Chinese phone number (see our Chinese Phone Number guide) to get 4G/5G backup. China Unicom offers foreigner-friendly SIM cards at Beijing Capital Airport. Data plans: 50-100 RMB/month for 20-50GB. WiFi calling: WhatsApp and FaceTime audio calls often work without VPN on Chinese mobile data (but not on WiFi without VPN).

Best Neighborhoods for Digital Nomads
Sanlitun: Best overall for digital nomads. Pros: most international-friendly area, endless cafes and restaurants, best expat community, good subway access (Line 10), lively nightlife. Cons: can be noisy, more expensive than other areas. Monthly rent: 8,000-15,000 RMB for a 1-bedroom apartment. Wudaokou: Best for budget-conscious nomads. Pros: near several universities, student vibe, affordable restaurants and housing, English-friendly community, good subway access (Line 13). Cons: far from major tourist attractions, less polished than Sanlitun. Monthly rent: 5,000-10,000 RMB for a 1-bedroom apartment. Guomao (CBD): Best for professionals. Pros: modern apartments, excellent subway connections, upscale malls and restaurants, many Western chains, business atmosphere. Cons: feels corporate, less local character. Monthly rent: 10,000-20,000 RMB for a 1-bedroom apartment. Dongcheng (Hutong area): Best for authentic Beijing experience. Pros: beautiful traditional architecture, central location, unique atmosphere, quieter than Sanlitun. Cons: apartments may have thin walls, less modern amenities, some buildings lack elevators. Monthly rent: 7,000-12,000 RMB for a 1-bedroom apartment. Hidden Beijing recommendation: stay in Sanlitun for your first month in Beijing. It is the easiest base to settle in, find community, and navigate daily life. Once you are familiar with the city, consider exploring other neighborhoods.
Practical Tips for Long-Term Stays
Visa for digital nomads: tourist visa (L-visa): typically 30-90 days. Some nationalities can extend once in China. Student visa (X-visa): if enrolled in a course. Work visa (Z-visa): requires a Chinese employer. Business visa (M-visa): for business activities. Note: China does not have a specific digital nomad visa as of 2025. Most digital nomads use tourist visas and do visa runs to Hong Kong, Seoul, or Tokyo every 30-90 days. Banking: Bank of China or China Merchants Bank are foreigner-friendly. Opening an account: bring your passport, visa, and a Chinese phone number. Process takes 30-60 minutes. Alipay and WeChat Pay are essential for daily life (see our payment guide). Healthcare: Beijing United Family Hospital (BJU) is best for foreigners. Monthly health insurance: $100-300 depending on coverage. Get travel insurance with medical coverage for your initial stay. Food delivery: Meituan and Ele.me are the main delivery apps (Chinese language only, use Google Translate). Delivery is fast (20-40 minutes) and cheap (delivery fee: 3-5 RMB). Groceries: Jenny Wang's (Sanlitun) and April Gourmet (various locations) are Western-style supermarkets. Wumart and Hualian are local options. Transportation: DiDi (Chinese Uber) is essential. Beijing Subway is excellent (English signs on all lines). Buy a Yikatong transit card (can be added to Apple Wallet). Monthly subway pass: ~200-400 RMB.
