How to Use Taobao and Online Shopping in China as a Foreigner 2025
Hidden Beijing Guide

Taobao is China's massive online marketplace where you can find almost anything. For foreigners, the main barrier is the registration process, which requires a Chinese ID or Alipay verification. This guide walks you through every step, from registration to delivery at your Beijing hotel.

Taobao Registration Without a Chinese ID (Step by Step)

Method 1: Register through Alipay (Easiest). If you already have Alipay set up (see our WeChat Pay guide), you can use your Alipay account to log in to Taobao. Step 1: Download the Taobao app from your app store (or Chinese app store if in China). Step 2: Select the 'Alipay Login' option on the login page. Step 3: Alipay will auto-verify your identity using your linked passport. Step 4: Create or confirm your shipping address (see below). That is it. Your Alipay international card can be used for payment. Method 2: Standard registration (More complicated). Step 1: Go to taobao.com or download the app. Step 2: Click 'Register' and select 'Alipay Account Registration' (not phone number registration - phone number registration requires Chinese ID). Step 3: Enter your email address. Step 4: Verify your email. Step 5: You are registered but need to complete 'real-name verification.' This requires your passport and face verification. Go to Account > Security > Real-Name Verification. Upload your passport photo page. Complete the face scan (the app will guide you). Verification takes 1-24 hours. Alternative: use JD.com (京东) instead. JD.com has a simpler foreigner registration process through their international portal (global.jd.com). JD also has better English support and faster delivery in Beijing (often same-day or next-day). Warning: Taobao's interface is almost entirely in Chinese. Use Google Translate's screen translation feature on your phone to navigate. The app is notoriously difficult for non-Chinese speakers.

Paying on Taobao with a Foreign Card

Alipay international card: if you linked your Visa/Mastercard to Alipay (see our payment guide), Taobao will charge your Alipay-linked card. This is the easiest method. The transaction goes through Alipay's international payment system. Single transaction limit: approximately $5,000 USD per transaction (more than enough for most purchases). Alipay balance: if you have RMB balance in your Alipay account (loaded via UnionPay Tourist Pass or bank transfer), you can use that balance directly on Taobao. This avoids the 3% Alipay international card fee. Direct card payment: some merchants on Taobao accept Visa/Mastercard directly, but this is inconsistent. Do not rely on it. What about JD.com? JD.com accepts international Visa/Mastercard directly on their global portal (global.jd.com). JD also accepts PayPal on their international site. This is much easier for foreigners. Hidden Beijing recommendation: use JD.com (global.jd.com) for most purchases. It is easier, has better English support, and has faster delivery in Beijing. Use Taobao only for items not available on JD (which is rare). Price comparison: JD.com prices are generally similar to Taobao (within 5-10%). The convenience of JD's English interface and foreigner-friendly checkout justifies the small premium.

Shipping to Your Beijing Hotel (What You Need to Know)

Can you ship to a hotel? Yes. Most hotels in Beijing accept packages for guests. How it works: when placing an order, enter your hotel address in Chinese. Format: Hotel Name (酒店名称), Street Address (街道地址), District (区), Beijing (北京), China (中国). Add 'Guest Reservation - [Your Name]' in the recipient field. Call your hotel front desk before ordering. Tell them: 'I am expecting a package from Taobao/JD. My name is [Name]. My reservation number is [Number].' The front desk will accept and hold the package for you. Delivery time in Beijing: JD.com often delivers within 24 hours (same-day in some Chaoyang/Sanlitun areas). Taobao delivery: typically 2-4 days within Beijing. What to buy: power banks (cheaper than home countries), phone accessories (cheap cases, screen protectors), Chinese brand clothing (cheap and stylish), tea and snacks, souvenirs (much cheaper than tourist shops). What NOT to buy: electronics with international warranty concerns, cosmetics (counterfeit risk on Taobao), international brand items (may be counterfeit). Cash on delivery option: some Taobao orders allow 'cash on delivery' (货到付款). The courier will call you when they arrive at your hotel. Meet them at the lobby with cash. This option avoids the need for online payment entirely. Returns: returning items in China is generally easy. Most items have 'free return' (免费退货) within 7 days. The courier will pick up the item from your hotel. Refund goes back to your Alipay or card within 1-3 days.
