How to Get a Chinese Phone Number as a Tourist 2025: Step-by-Step
Hidden Beijing Guide

A Chinese phone number unlocks nearly every digital service in China. WeChat registration, DiDi ride-hailing, 12306 train booking, food delivery apps, and even some museum reservations require SMS verification to a Chinese number. This guide covers every way to get one, even if you are only visiting for a few days.

Method 1: China Unicom Tourist SIM at Beijing Airport (Fastest and Best)

This is our top recommendation for most travelers. Buy a China Unicom tourist SIM card at Beijing Capital Airport or Daxing Airport immediately after clearing immigration. Location: Beijing Capital Airport (PEK) Terminal 3 - arrivals hall, near the exit. Look for the green China Unicom counter. Beijing Daxing Airport (PKX) - arrivals hall, near the exit. Operating hours: 7:00 AM to midnight (both airports). What you need: your passport (original). Cash (RMB) or credit card (Visa/Mastercard accepted at airport counters). The staff will register the SIM in your name using your passport. This is required by Chinese law. Available packages: 5 GB / 7 days = 100 RMB ($14). 10 GB / 15 days = 150 RMB ($21). 20 GB / 30 days = 200 RMB ($28). All packages include a Chinese phone number, unlimited domestic calls within China, unlimited SMS within China. Installation: the staff will install the SIM for you and ensure it works before you leave the counter. Your phone must be unlocked (not carrier-locked to a non-Chinese carrier). Most modern phones work. Important: keep the SIM card holder/pin. You will need it if you switch SIMs. The number assigned to you is permanent for the duration of your package. Write it down somewhere - you need it for 12306 and WeChat. Pros: includes real phone number, fastest data speeds (5G in Beijing), cheapest long-term option, staff handles registration. Cons: requires visiting airport counter, passport needed, must be unlocked phone.

Method 2: China Mobile Tourist SIM (Alternative at Both Airports)

China Mobile offers similar tourist packages at Beijing airports. Location: adjacent to China Unicom counters at both airports. Packages: similar pricing to China Unicom (100-200 RMB range). Data speeds: comparable to China Unicom (30-60 Mbps 5G in Beijing). China Mobile has slightly better coverage for trips outside Beijing (Great Wall, suburbs, rural areas). Coverage advantage: if you plan to visit the Great Wall (Mutianyu or Jinshanling sections) or take day trips outside Beijing, China Mobile has better signal in these areas. Also better for high-speed train routes through tunnels and rural stretches. Which to choose: if staying mostly in Beijing city - China Unicom is fine. If taking day trips or traveling between cities by train - choose China Mobile for better rural coverage. Both have English-speaking staff at the airport counters. Both accept passports and process registration in 5-10 minutes. Pro tip: buy the SIM immediately after clearing immigration, before collecting luggage. This gives the staff time to process your registration while you wait for bags. Both counters are near the baggage claim exits.

Essential Services That Require a Chinese Phone Number

WeChat registration: a Chinese phone number dramatically simplifies WeChat setup. While you can use your home number for initial registration, many WeChat features (WeChat Pay, mini-programs, group chats) work better with a Chinese number. 12306 train booking: the official 12306 app requires SMS verification to register. A Chinese number is mandatory for direct 12306 registration. Trip.com works with your home number but charges service fees. DiDi ride-hailing: DiDi requires SMS verification for the initial setup. A Chinese number makes this instant. Your home number may receive the SMS with delays. Meituan and Ele.me food delivery: both require Chinese numbers for registration. If you want food delivered to your hotel, you need a Chinese number. Bailu/Mobike (bike sharing): bike rental apps require Chinese number registration. Some museum reservations: the National Museum of China and some popular attractions require a Chinese number for online reservations. Banking: UnionPay Tourist Pass registration requires a Chinese number. Hotel check-in: some budget hotels ask for a Chinese contact number (use the hotel's own number in this case). In summary: a Chinese phone number is not strictly essential for short trips (3-5 days), but it makes everything significantly easier. For trips longer than 5 days, we strongly recommend getting one at the airport upon arrival.
