Staying connected in China starts with choosing the right connectivity solution. eSIMs have revolutionized travel connectivity, but China presents unique challenges. The Great Firewall affects some eSIM providers differently, and data speeds vary dramatically between providers. We tested every major eSIM option inside Beijing in May 2025 to bring you this definitive comparison.

Airalo China eSIM: Best for Short Trips (3-7 Days)
Airalo is the most popular eSIM provider for China and our top recommendation for short trips. How it works: download the Airalo app outside China (important - app may be slow inside China), purchase a China eSIM package, install the eSIM profile on your phone (QR code), activate when you arrive in Beijing. Pricing: 1 GB / 7 days = $4.50. 3 GB / 30 days = $11.00. 5 GB / 30 days = $16.00. 10 GB / 30 days = $26.00. Data speeds in Beijing: tested at 15-30 Mbps on 4G/LTE (sufficient for Google Maps, WhatsApp, browsing). 5G available in most Beijing areas. VPN compatibility: Airalo uses China Unicom as its local carrier. VPNs work normally - we tested ExpressVPN and NordVPN successfully on Airalo data. Pros: easy setup, reliable connection, works with VPNs, 24/7 customer support. Cons: no phone number (data only), slightly more expensive than local SIM, must install before arriving. Best for: travelers staying 3-7 days who want hassle-free setup.
Holafly China eSIM: Best for Unlimited Data
Holafly offers unlimited data plans that are ideal for heavy data users. Pricing: 5 days unlimited = $19.00. 10 days unlimited = $34.00. 15 days unlimited = $47.00. 20 days unlimited = $54.00. 30 days unlimited = $69.00. Data speeds in Beijing: tested at 10-20 Mbps on 4G/LTE. Speed is throttled after 500 MB daily usage (common for unlimited plans). VPN compatibility: Holafly uses China Mobile as its local carrier. VPNs work but we experienced occasional slowdowns. We recommend using ExpressVPN's obfuscated protocol with Holafly. Pros: unlimited data, no worrying about running out, easy setup via app. Cons: throttled after 500 MB/day (fine for browsing but not streaming), more expensive for shorter trips, no phone number. Best for: travelers staying 10+ days who need constant connectivity.

Local Chinese eSIM (China Unicom / China Mobile): Best for Long Stays
If you are staying more than 2 weeks, buying a local Chinese eSIM gives you the best value and performance. China Unicom Tourist eSIM: available at Beijing Capital Airport Terminal 3 arrivals hall and Beijing Daxing Airport arrivals hall. Pricing: 5 GB / 7 days = approximately 100 RMB ($14). 10 GB / 15 days = approximately 150 RMB ($21). 20 GB / 30 days = approximately 200 RMB ($28). Includes a Chinese phone number (critical for 12306 train booking, WeChat registration, DiDi account setup). Activation: requires passport. Staff at airport counters speak basic English. They will install and activate the eSIM for you. Process takes 5-10 minutes. Data speeds: tested at 30-60 Mbps on 5G in Beijing - significantly faster than Airalo/Holafly. VPN compatibility: excellent. We tested VPNs on China Unicom 5G and achieved stable connections with ExpressVPN. China Mobile Tourist eSIM: similar pricing, similar speeds. Available at same airport locations. China Mobile has slightly better coverage in remote areas (Great Wall, suburbs). Pros: fastest speeds, includes phone number, cheapest for long stays, best VPN performance. Cons: requires visiting an airport counter, passport needed, short wait time. Best for: travelers staying 2+ weeks who need a Chinese phone number.
Physical SIM vs eSIM: Which Should You Choose?
Physical SIM (China Unicom/China Mobile airport counter): Chinese phone number included. Faster 5G speeds (30-60 Mbps). Cheaper for long stays. Requires physical visit to airport counter. Works with all phones. Can be used for WeChat/DiDi/12306 verification. eSIM (Airalo/Holafly): No physical visit needed. Setup before arrival. Usually no phone number (data only). More expensive per GB. Slower speeds (10-30 Mbps). Only works with eSIM-compatible phones (iPhone XS+/Google Pixel+/Samsung S20+). Our recommendation: If your phone supports eSIM, use Airalo for your first 1-3 days (activated before departure), then buy a local China Unicom SIM with a phone number at the airport for the rest of your trip. This gives you connectivity from the moment you land plus a local number for essential services. If you are staying 5 days or less, just use Airalo eSIM - the convenience outweighs the cost difference. If you need a Chinese phone number for 12306 train booking (recommended), you must get a local SIM or eSIM from China Unicom or China Mobile.
