Beijing Weather Guide: Best Time to Visit + Complete Packing Lists
Hidden Beijing Guide

Beijing has four distinct seasons with extreme temperature variations. Knowing what weather to expect and packing accordingly can make or break your trip. Spring brings dust storms, summer brings heat waves and rain, autumn is perfect, and winter is bitterly cold with crystalline blue skies. This guide covers everything you need to know for each season.

Spring (March-May): Dust Storms and Warming Temperatures

March: temperatures 2-12°C (35-54°F). Cold but warming. Occasional dust storms from the Gobi Desert. Pack: thermal layers, medium jacket, scarf for dust, moisturizer (air is very dry). April: temperatures 10-20°C (50-68°F). Pleasant but unpredictable. Cherry blossoms bloom. Occasional rain. Pack: light jacket, long sleeves, umbrella, comfortable walking shoes. May: temperatures 16-26°C (61-79°F). Excellent weather. Best month for outdoor activities. Great Wall hiking is perfect in May. Pack: t-shirts, light jacket for evenings, sun hat, sunscreen. Air quality: spring has the worst air quality due to dust storms and lingering coal heating. Check air quality index (AQI) daily. On days with AQI over 150, wear an N95 mask. Download the China Air Quality Index app. Spring festivals: Qingming Festival (early April) - tomb sweeping holiday, many locals travel. May Day (May 1-5) - Golden Week, attractions are crowded. Book everything in advance.

Summer (June-August): Hot, Humid, and Rainy

June: temperatures 20-30°C (68-86°F). Hot and increasingly humid. Start of monsoon season. Pack: lightweight clothing, rain jacket, umbrella, sunscreen SPF 50+, insect repellent. July: temperatures 23-31°C (73-88°F). Hottest month. High humidity (70-80%). Afternoon thunderstorms common. Pack: same as June plus a portable fan, sweat wipes, breathable fabrics only (linen, cotton). August: temperatures 22-30°C (72-86°F). Still hot and humid. Peak of summer rain season. Pack: quick-dry clothing, waterproof shoes, rain poncho, extra socks. Summer survival tips: the Forbidden City and Temple of Heaven have very little shade. Visit early morning (7-8 AM) to avoid midday heat. Carry 1+ liters of water at all times. Avoid 12-3 PM outdoor activities. Most attractions have indoor sections - plan to visit museums during peak heat. Use the Beijing Subway for air-conditioned transport between sites. Summer is low season for tourism (fewer visitors, lower hotel prices). The Great Wall is beautiful in summer but can be dangerously hot. Visit Mutianyu section (has a cable car and some shade). Summer evening activities: night markets are vibrant (Wangfujing Night Market, Guijie Street). Rooftop bars in Sanlitun and CBD are excellent in summer evenings.

Autumn (September-November): The Perfect Season

September: temperatures 18-26°C (64-79°F). Excellent weather - warm days, cool evenings. Low humidity. Best month for hiking and outdoor activities. Pack: t-shirts, light jacket, comfortable walking shoes. October: temperatures 10-20°C (50-68°F). Peak autumn season. Clear blue skies, golden leaves. The Forbidden City with autumn colors is spectacular. National Day holiday (Oct 1-7) is Golden Week - the busiest travel week of the year. Avoid major attractions during Oct 1-5 if possible. Pack: layers, medium jacket, long pants. November: temperatures 2-10°C (35-50°F). Getting cold. Central heating turns on November 15. Air quality improves after heating turns on (coal heating replaced by natural gas in recent years). Pack: warm jacket, thermal layer, scarf. Autumn is widely considered the best time to visit Beijing. September and October have the most comfortable weather, clearest skies, and best photography conditions. Book hotels and flights well in advance for September-October - this is peak tourist season. Photography tip: sunrise at the Great Wall in October is spectacular. Join a sunrise tour that departs at 4 AM. The Forbidden City in autumn has golden ginkgo trees that make incredible photos.

Winter (December-February): Bitter Cold but Beautiful

December: temperatures -5 to 3°C (23-37°F). Cold and dry. Very few tourists. Central heating makes indoor spaces comfortable. Potential snow (1-2 snowfalls per year). Pack: heavy winter jacket, thermal underwear, warm hat, gloves, scarf, wool socks, insulated boots. January: temperatures -8 to 1°C (18-34°F). Coldest month. Clear blue skies. The Great Wall covered in snow is stunning but dangerously cold. Pack: maximum winter gear. Multiple thin layers work better than one thick layer. Hand warmers are lifesavers. February: temperatures -5 to 4°C (23-39°F). Still cold but warming. Chinese New Year (Spring Festival) falls in January or February - the entire country shuts down for 1-2 weeks. If visiting during Chinese New Year: book everything months in advance, many restaurants close for the holiday, trains are fully booked. Winter benefits: almost no tourists at major attractions. The Forbidden City in winter has 10% of summer crowds. Hotel prices are 30-50% lower than in autumn. Air quality: winter used to have terrible smog, but since 2017-2020 coal-to-gas conversions, winter air quality has improved dramatically. Still check AQI daily and wear an N95 on bad days (AQI 150+). Winter activities: ice skating at Houhai Lake, ice sculptures at Longqingxia, hot pot every night (the ultimate winter meal in Beijing).
