Beijing Subway is the best way to navigate the city without speaking Chinese, and 2025 updates have made it even easier for international travelers. With 27 lines covering 800+ kilometers, the network reaches almost every major attraction and neighborhood. This guide covers everything from buying tickets with a foreign card to navigating the network.
2025 Update: Contactless Visa/Mastercard Now Works at All Stations
The biggest improvement for foreign travelers in 2025: you can now tap your contactless Visa or Mastercard directly at subway station gates. No app setup, no Chinese phone number, no cash needed. How it works: look for the contactless payment pad on the ticket gate (usually a circular icon with waves symbol). Tap your physical credit card or phone (Apple Pay/Google Pay) on the pad. The gate opens. Same card must be tapped at exit to complete the journey. The fare is automatically charged. Accepted cards: Visa and Mastercard contactless credit/debit cards. Apple Pay and Google Pay work if they have a Visa/MC card linked. American Express is not accepted. What if it doesn't work? Try a different gate (some gates are older and lack contactless readers). Push the 'Help' button on the gate. Station staff will assist. Keep a backup 10-20 RMB note for ticket machine emergency. Fare comparison: contactless card: same as standard fare (3-9 RMB per ride depending on distance). Single-use ticket from machine: 3-9 RMB. Beijing Subway transportation card: 20 RMB deposit + load value. Best option: use contactless Visa/Mastercard for convenience. No deposit, no setup, no balance to manage.

App-Based Subway Navigation (Best Tools)
Best app for subway navigation: Apple Maps. Surprisingly, Apple Maps works better than Google Maps for Beijing Subway. It shows accurate routes, transfer stations, exit numbers, and estimated travel times. Works without a VPN for subway data. Google Maps (with VPN): shows subway routes but not real-time. Good for planning but not for live navigation. Baidu Maps (Chinese app): most accurate for Beijing. Shows exact exit numbers, transfer walking times, and station facilities. Has English mode (Settings > Language). Must download before you go or use Chinese app store. WeChat Mini Program for Beijing Subway: search 'Beijing Subway' or '北京地铁' in WeChat. Shows real-time line maps. No download needed. Works inside WeChat. Pro tip for exits: Beijing Subway stations have multiple exits (A, B, C, D, etc.) and different exits lead to different streets. Always check which exit you need before going through the gate. Exit the gate at the far end of the platform in the direction of your destination. Station apps and Google Maps tell you which exit to use. Transfer tips: Beijing South station and Xizhimen station are notorious for long transfer walks (5-10 minutes). Avoid these during peak hours (8-9 AM, 5-7 PM). The stations with easiest transfers are: Dongdan (Line 1 to Line 5), Yonghegong (Line 2 to Line 5), Guomao (Line 1 to Line 10).
