Accessing international websites like Google, Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp requires a VPN in China. Set everything up BEFORE you arrive - it is much harder once you are inside the country. This guide covers the most reliable VPNs and how to configure them.
Set Up Before You Arrive
This is the most important rule: install and test your VPN before landing in China. Download the app, create your account, and make sure it works on your device. Once you arrive, Chinese networks will block VPN installation websites. Set up on all your devices - phone, laptop, and tablet.
Which VPNs Work in China?
The VPN landscape in China changes constantly. ExpressVPN, NordVPN, and Surfshark are generally reliable choices, and AstrillVPN has been popular for years with heavy China users. Avoid free VPNs - they rarely work in China. Be prepared with 2-3 options as backup since VPNs can be blocked unexpectedly.

Installing on iPhone/iPad
If you use an iPhone, you have two options. Option 1: Install the VPN app before arriving in China (recommended). Option 2: Use a Hong Kong or international App Store account if you need to download after arrival. Download and test everything before your trip.
Installing on Android
Android users should install the VPN app before arriving. Google Play Store is blocked in China, so you cannot download apps after arrival. You can sideload APK files, but this is more complicated. Some phones with international ROMs may have Google services working.
Connecting After Arrival
Once in China, connect to WiFi or mobile data, then launch your VPN app. Try different protocols if one does not connect - OpenVPN, WireGuard, or IKEv2. If your VPN fails, switch to a backup. Airport WiFi blocks VPNs more strictly - try using your hotel WiFi first.
Free WiFi vs Mobile Data
Get a Chinese SIM card for more reliable VPN connections. Hotel WiFi often has looser restrictions than public WiFi. Avoid using VPNs on airport or train station WiFi as these are heavily monitored. Using mobile data from a Chinese SIM card often works better for VPN connections.
