China is almost cashless, and mobile payments dominate. As a foreigner, you can set up WeChat Pay and Alipay with a foreign credit card. This guide walks through every payment method and how to set them up before your trip.
Setting Up WeChat Pay Before Your Trip
Download WeChat and create an account. Go to Me > Services > WeChat Pay. Add your foreign credit card (Visa, Mastercard, or Amex). You may need to verify with your passport. Set up before arriving in China as some features are easier to access internationally. Link a Tour Card if available.
Setting Up Alipay
Download Alipay and create an account. Look for the 'Tour Pass' or 'International' option. Link your foreign credit card. Alipay has a specific tourist mode that accepts international cards more easily than WeChat Pay. Many merchants in Beijing accept Alipay.

Do You Need Cash?
Yes, carry some cash for emergencies. Small street vendors, some taxis, and local markets may not accept cards. Exchange currency at the airport or Bank of China branches. ATMs accept foreign cards at major banks. Keep 500-1000 RMB ($70-140) in cash for backup.
Credit Card Acceptance
International credit cards work at major hotels, upscale restaurants, and large shopping malls. They do NOT work at most local restaurants, street vendors, or small shops. UnionPay is widely accepted. Visa and Mastercard are accepted at tourist-oriented businesses. Always have mobile payment as backup.
Currency Exchange
Exchange at the airport for the best convenience. Bank of China branches offer good rates. Avoid exchanging at hotels as rates are poor. Bring USD, EUR, or GBP for best exchange rates. Some ATMs allow direct withdrawal in RMB from foreign accounts.
Tipping in Beijing
Tipping is NOT expected in China. Do not tip at restaurants, hotels, or for taxis. Some high-end tourist restaurants may include a service charge. Offering a tip can actually cause confusion. If you receive exceptional service, a small gift is more appreciated than cash.
