Tipping is NOT part of Chinese culture. In fact, it can cause awkwardness or confusion. Unlike in the US or Europe, service workers in China are paid fair wages and do not expect tips. This guide explains when you might still tip and better alternatives.

Restaurants - No Tipping

Do NOT tip at restaurants in Beijing. This includes casual restaurants and fine dining. The bill is the final amount. Some high-end restaurants may add a service charge (服务费) to the bill - this is not a tip. Leaving money on the table may be seen as strange.

Hotels - No Tipping

Do not tip hotel staff. Bellboys, housekeeping, and front desk staff do not expect tips. If you want to show appreciation, a small gift from your home country is more meaningful than cash. International luxury hotels are used to foreign guests but still do not expect tips.

Taxis - No Tipping

Taxi drivers do not expect tips. Round up to the nearest yuan if you want (e.g., pay 31 RMB for a 30.5 RMB fare). Didi rides are also no-tip. If a driver helps with heavy luggage, a small 5-10 RMB gesture is appreciated but not expected.

Tour Guides - Exceptions

Private tour guides are the one exception. If you hire a private guide for a full day, a tip of 50-100 RMB ($7-14) is appreciated but not required. Group tour guides do not expect tips. Always check if your tour package already includes gratuity.

Better Ways to Show Appreciation

A genuine thank you (xie xie) is more meaningful than money in Chinese culture. A small gift from your home country - postcards, snacks, or small souvenirs - is a lovely gesture. Writing a positive online review helps their business. A friendly attitude and respect go a long way.
