DiDi is China's ride-hailing app and, for most visitors, the single most useful app after WeChat and Alipay. The good news is that the foreigner-unfriendly era is over: you can register with your home phone number, pay with a Visa or Mastercard, and use an English interface. The bad news is that the failure modes are all about pickup pins and building compounds, not about language. Here is how to set it up in ten minutes and how to avoid the three things that waste the most time.

Why DiDi Is the Default in Beijing
You type the destination in the app, so you never have to explain an address to a driver who does not speak English. The fare is metered and shown before you confirm, so there is no negotiation and no route argument. Payment is automatic through the app, so you never need cash or a card machine. You get an electronic receipt, which matters if you are claiming expenses. And in Beijing, DiDi and street taxis are usually within 10 to 20 percent of each other on price - this is not a case where the app is a luxury. Street taxis still win in exactly two situations: a taxi rank at an airport or train station where cars are already queuing, and a hutong street where a driver can flag one down in ten seconds while your app is still finding a car.
Three Ways to Book Without a Chinese Phone Number
Option one, the DiDi-Greater China app: download the international build, register with your home number, add an international card, and switch the interface to English. This is the most capable option and the only one that reliably handles scheduled rides. Option two, Alipay: open Alipay, tap Transport, then Taxi. It uses your existing Alipay identity and linked card, so there is no second signup and no new app. The interface is partly translated and the flow is simpler than DiDi for a one-off ride. Option three, WeChat: Me, then Services, then scroll to Mobility or Ride Hailing. Functionally the same as Alipay via a different doorway, and useful if WeChat Pay is already working for you. If you would rather have a fixed price and a driver holding a sign, Trip.com sells airport transfers with English support - it costs more, but there is nothing to configure on arrival at midnight.

Setting Up the DiDi App in Ten Minutes
Search your app store for DiDi-Greater China, not the mainland DiDi app - the mainland build expects a Chinese number and Chinese payment. Register with your home mobile number; the SMS code arrives normally on most carriers, though occasionally with a delay. Add a payment method: Visa, Mastercard or American Express debit and credit cards are accepted, and the card needs to support foreign transactions. Turn on location and allow it in the background, because the app will refuse to find cars otherwise. Open settings and switch the language to English if it has not detected your phone locale. Then save two addresses - your hotel and the airport - so you are not fumbling with map pins on arrival. One setup note that saves pain later: enable the in-app calling and messaging features, because drivers will contact you and those two channels auto-translate, while a direct phone call will not.
Booking a Ride Without Speaking Chinese
Searching by English name works for landmarks and hotels and fails for small restaurants and residential addresses. The reliable method is to paste the Chinese address, or to drop the pin on the map and confirm. Then the part that decides whether your ride actually happens: check the pickup pin before you confirm. In Beijing, the most common cause of a cancelled ride is a pin on the wrong side of a ring road, inside a gated compound, or in a bus lane where the driver cannot stop. Zoom in, move the pin to a spot on the main road outside your gate, and add a note in the pickup instructions. Once booked, the driver may call - let it ring and use the app chat instead, where the canned phrases (I am at the pickup point, please wait two minutes, I am wearing a blue jacket) are all pre-translated. You can also watch the car on the map, which is worth doing because drivers sometimes stop 50 meters early and wait.
Airport Pickups at PEK and PKX
Beijing Capital (PEK) Terminal 3: ride-hailing pickup is in the parking building rather than at the curb, and the app will route you to a level and a gate. Follow the signs for 网约车 and confirm the level with the driver in chat, because the parking structure has several. Beijing Daxing (PKX) is larger and more spread out, with dedicated ride-hailing floors; budget an extra 10 to 15 minutes of walking. Costs from the airports: PEK to Sanlitun or the CBD runs about 100 to 150 RMB, PKX to downtown about 180 to 260 RMB, with expressway tolls of 10 to 20 RMB usually folded into the quoted fare. At 01:00 with no traffic, those numbers drop to the low end; at 08:30 they do not. If your flight lands after the Airport Express stops around 22:30, DiDi is the only sensible option and the queue for cars is short because supply is high at that hour.
What a Ride Actually Costs in Beijing
Flag fall is 13 RMB for the first 3 kilometers, then roughly 2.3 RMB per kilometer, with a 20 percent night surcharge between 23:00 and 05:00 and a waiting charge if the driver sits. Real examples: Sanlitun to the Forbidden City, 25 to 35 RMB. Wangfujing to the Summer Palace, 70 to 90 RMB. Guomao to the Temple of Heaven, 30 to 40 RMB. The airport runs above. Surge pricing exists but is mild by international standards except during heavy rain, snow, and Friday and Saturday nights after 22:00. You do not tip - there is no mechanism for it and drivers do not expect it. The app charges the meter, and the amount you see at the end is the amount charged.
Receipts, Lost Items and Disputes
For an expense claim, open the completed trip and request the fapiao - the electronic invoice is issued in-app and can be emailed. For a lost item, go to trip history, open the trip, and use the contact-driver option; if the driver does not respond within a few hours, escalate through customer service in the app. Recovery rates are genuinely high in Beijing, but you need the trip record, so do not delete the app until you have your bag back. For a fare dispute or a route that clearly went the wrong way, file the complaint from the trip detail page; DiDi usually resolves within 48 hours and refunds the difference without argument. What you should not do is pay anything off-app, which voids all of that protection.
When Not to Use DiDi
Under 1.5 kilometers inside a hutong, walk - the driver will spend as long finding you as the trip takes. Between 08:00 and 09:30 and 17:30 and 19:00 on the 2nd and 3rd Ring Roads, the subway beats a car by a wide margin. In heavy rain or snow, surge and cancellations spike simultaneously and you can wait 20 minutes for a car that then cancels; the subway does not cancel. For a Great Wall day trip, a booked car with a driver for the day is the right tool - long-distance DiDi requests to Mutianyu or Jinshanling often get cancelled, or the driver asks to settle off-app in cash, which removes your protection. And for the Airport Express corridor at rush hour, the train at 25 RMB is faster than any car.
