Jianbing is Beijing's most beloved street breakfast - a savory crepe filled with egg, crispy crackers, fresh herbs, and sauce. It costs about 6-10 RMB and is the perfect start to a day of sightseeing.
What Is Jianbing?
A thin crepe made from wheat and millet flour batter, spread on a hot griddle. An egg is cracked on top, then the crepe is flipped. It is brushed with sweet bean sauce and chili sauce, sprinkled with green onions and cilantro, and folded around a crispy fried cracker.
How to Order
Walk up to the cart, point at what you want, and say 'lai yi ge' (buy one). The vendor will ask if you want 'la de' (spicy) or 'bu la' (not spicy). Standard jianbing costs 6-10 RMB. Watch as the vendor makes it fresh.

Where to Find the Best
The best jianbing comes from street carts near office areas during breakfast (7-10 AM). The hutongs around Gulou have excellent local vendors. Near subway station exits in the morning is prime jianbing territory.
