Expert Tips for the Perfect Visit
Start Early
The Great Wall gets crowded by 10am. Aim to arrive at 8am for a peaceful experience with morning light and thinner crowds.
Book Tickets Online
Buy your tickets on WeChat or through your hotel. Online tickets are cheaper and skip the ticket line.
Wear the Right Shoes
The Wall has steep sections and uneven steps. Hiking shoes or sturdy sneakers are essential. No flip-flops!
Bring Enough Water
Bring at least 1 liter per person. Water on the Wall costs 3-5x more than at the base.
Sun Protection
There is very little shade on the Great Wall. Sunscreen, hat, and sunglasses are must-haves.
Try the Toboggan
At Mutianyu, the toboggan ride down is a fun way to descend. It costs about $5 and is worth every yuan.
Choose Your Day Wisely
Visit on a Tuesday or Wednesday for the fewest crowds. Mondays are busy because museums in Beijing are closed.
Eat Before or After
Food at the Wall is overpriced and mediocre. Eat a good breakfast before you go or bring snacks.
What to Bring
Great Wall + Local Experience
Combine your Great Wall visit with authentic local food at a countryside farmhouse restaurant. Fresh mountain vegetables, trout from local streams, and homemade noodles.
