Expert Tips for First-Time Visitors
Book Tickets in Advance
Forbidden City tickets sell out quickly, especially during holidays. Book at least 3-7 days ahead on the official website or WeChat mini-program.
Arrive Early
The gates open at 8:30am. Arrive by 8:15am to beat the crowds. The palace is quietest in the first hour.
Enter from the South
The Meridian Gate (south entrance) is the main entry. Exit through the Gate of Divine Might (north) into Jingshan Park.
Bring Your Passport
You must show your passport to enter. Digital copies on your phone are accepted at most gates.
Skip the Crowds
Head straight to the back palaces first, then work your way forward. Most tourists start at the front.
Wear Comfortable Shoes
The Forbidden City is massive. You'll walk 5-7 km just to see the main halls. Comfortable shoes are essential.
Audio Guide or App
Rent an audio guide at the entrance for $5 or download the Palace Museum app before you arrive.
Check the Weather
The Forbidden City has little shade. Bring water and a hat in summer. Avoid rainy days as the courtyards get slippery.
Combine with Jingshan Park
Right after visiting the Forbidden City, climb Jingshan Park hill just north of the exit. From the top, you'll get the ONLY elevated view of the entire palace from outside.
