Public toilets in Beijing have improved dramatically, but they can still be challenging for foreign visitors. Knowing what to expect and how to prepare makes the experience much more comfortable.
Carry Your Own Toilet Paper
This is the most important rule. Most public toilets in Beijing do NOT provide toilet paper. Always carry tissues or a small toilet paper roll. Convenience stores sell tissue packs for 1-2 RMB. Keep some in your bag at all times.
Squat Toilets vs Western Toilets
Many public toilets have squat toilets, especially at attractions, parks, and older establishments. Western toilets are common in hotels, malls, and international restaurants. Some toilets have both options. Practice squatting before your trip if you are not used to it.

Finding Clean Toilets
Shopping malls have the cleanest toilets. International hotels allow non-guests to use their facilities. Starbucks and Western cafes usually have decent toilets. Subway station toilets vary - main stations are better than small ones. Avoid toilets at street markets.
Toilet Etiquette
Do not flush toilet paper down the toilet in many older buildings - use the bin provided. Some toilets have sensors that automatically flush. Lock doors properly as locks can be unreliable. Knock before entering an unlocked stall. Hand sanitizer is essential as soap is not always available.
Emergency Toilet Apps
Baidu Maps and Gaode Maps can find nearby public toilets. The Beijing Toilet app (if available) shows clean public facilities. Hotel lobbies are always a safe option. In emergencies, any restaurant or cafe will usually let you use their facilities.
